Mark is a national leader and pioneer in education, creating the first charter high school in California in 1995, one of the first school management organizations in 2001, and California’s first fully technology-blended middle and high schools in 2008. A former teacher, coach, principal, attorney, professor and CEO, he was the founding chair of the state charter commission, has taught courses on school innovation and startup at Stanford University’s Graduate School of Business and Graduate School of Education, and has served on numerous education boards, including San Francisco University High School, Flex Schools, and Leadership Schools, among others.
Selected honors include the Harvard Club of San Francisco’s Secondary School Educator of the Year, and the Hart Vision Award, one of the highest awards given to school administrators in California. Educated at Wesleyan University, University of Oxford, and Harvard University, Mark resides in San Francisco with his two children. He is currently serving as an educational consultant for preK-20 education institutions, with a focus on strategic planning, startup, school design, change management, and sustainable operations.
